derive from an oil exuded by certain plants during dry periods, whereupon it is adsorbed by clay-based soils and rocks. During rain, the oil is released into the air along with another compound, geosmin, producing the distinctive scent.
My coffee table is a big slab of shale that I found out in the forest, and I can get that rain smell just by sprinkling some water on it.
Just did an experiment with said table, and here are the results:
