The rise of climate denialism in the general population (
5% between 2019 and 2023) has been accompanied by a very significant increase in denialist activism on “X”/Twitter since the summer of 2022, and increased hostility towards climate scientists.
Through global tracking of Twitter exchanges about climate change between 2019 and 2023, as well as exchanges about COVID-19 pandemics, we analyzed this online trend and its interaction with other societal issues like politics and COVID-19 pandemics.
Beyond fact-checking, we show, through complex networks and semantic analyses, that there are structural differences between these denialist and pro-climate online communities, as well as between the circulation of false information and other climate change-related narratives.
All the evidence suggests that the behavior of deniers is designed to deceive, and that they are over-represented on social networks compared to what they actually represent offline. This is particularly true on “X”/Twitter since Musk’s takeover.
We have also highlighted the globalized aspect of this new denialism, its alignment with the interests and visions of powers such as Russia and how it has benefited from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jack Dorsey has been supporting alternatives to Twitter, the social-media platform he cofounded.
Dorsey gave $10 million to a project called Nostr and 14 bitcoins to Nostr's anonymous founder.
The founder is a Brazilian man who appears to be a big fan of a fascist conspiracy theorist.
The point is, Elon Musk has been angling to become a beloved poster for a minimum of five years now. Since my brush with this want of his, the man had to buy the entire goddamn website just to win status as a poster of note, only to instantly become one for all the wrong reasons. He bought the spotlight, pointed it at himself, and almost immediately became the consensus pick for the worst user in the site’s history. It had to sting, and now everyone has seen how well he’s handling that experience:
There's a lot of misinformation circulating that obscures or softens Jack Dorsey's relationship to #Bluesky, Bluesky to Twitter, &/or Dorsey to Musk/Twitter.
On Dec 11, 2019, Dorsey announced on Twitter that he'd started Bluesky as part of Twitter, to serve Twitter, & funded by Twitter $, "to develop an open & decentralized standard for social media." (One already existed. Clearly the goal was one he controlled.)
"The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this [Bluesky] standard."

On Tuesday, Musk gathered a group of engineers and advisors into a room at Twitter’s headquarters looking for answers. Why are his engagement numbers tanking?
“This is ridiculous,” he said, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the meeting. “I have more than 100 million followers, and I’m only getting tens of thousands of impressions.”
One of the company’s two remaining principal engineers offered a possible explanation for Musk’s declining reach: just under a year after the Tesla CEO made his surprise offer to buy Twitter for $44 billion, public interest in his antics is waning.
Employees showed Musk internal data regarding engagement with his account, along with a Google Trends chart. Last April, they told him, Musk was at “peak” popularity in search rankings, indicated by a score of “100.” Today, he’s at a score of nine. Engineers had previously investigated whether Musk’s reach had somehow been artificially restricted, but found no evidence that the algorithm was biased against him.
Musk did not take the news well.
“You’re fired, you’re fired,” Musk told the engineer. (Platformer is withholding the engineer’s name in light of the harassment Musk has directed at former Twitter employees.)
Dissatisfied with engineers’ work so far, Musk has instructed employees to track how many times each of his tweets are recommended, according to one current worker.

I should not know who Pete Buttigieg is. In a just world, the name Bari Weiss would mean as much to me as Nordic runes. This goes for people who actually might read Nordic runes too. No Swede deserves to be burdened with this knowledge. No Brazilian should have to regularly encounter the phrase “Dimes Square.” To the rest of the vast and varied world, My Pillow Guy and Papa John should be NPCs from a Nintendo DS Zelda title, not men of flesh and bone, pillow and pizza. Ted Cruz should be the name of an Italian pornstar in a Love Boat porn parody. Instead, I’m cursed to know that he is a senator from Texas who once stood next to a butter sculpture of a dairy cow and declared that his daughter’s first words were “I like butter.”
s the frisson of reading these weird corporate tweets happen because we are rating the social-media manager’s performance on Twitter, like an Olympic judge holding up a score at the end of each tweet (and supplying important metrics to the brand at the same time)? Or does the Denny’s brand’s mewling Twitter intimacy make us feel paternal, bound to support and foster our corporate brand children as they speak to us through the web, learning our native medium? That explanation doesn’t seem complete to me, though. I also feel a sinister intimation of power in these new corporate social-media voices. Denny’s the corporation has transformed itself through its tone into a
